Mineral Supplementation for Goats

Minerals are involved in virtually every biological process in a goat’s body — from bone formation and immune function to reproduction and milk production. Despite their importance, mineral deficiencies and imbalances are among the most common nutritional problems in goat herds, often because producers underestimate how much mineral nutrition varies by region, forage type, and production stage. This guide covers the essential minerals for goats, how to recognize deficiencies, the practical differences between loose minerals and blocks, and critical regional considerations that affect your supplementation program.

Why Minerals Require Special Attention in Goats

Goats have mineral requirements that differ significantly from cattle and sheep. The most important distinction involves copper: goats require copper at levels similar to cattle (10-80 ppm dietary copper depending on molybdenum and sulfur levels), while sheep are highly susceptible to copper toxicity at those same levels. This means you must never use sheep minerals for goats, and multi-species or “all stock” mineral mixes are almost always inadequate for goats. Additional factors that make mineral supplementation challenging:
  • Forage mineral content varies enormously by region, soil type, season, and plant species. A pasture in the selenium-deficient Northeast will produce very different forage than one in the selenium-adequate Great Plains.
  • Mineral interactions are complex. Excess molybdenum or sulfur in the diet binds copper and makes it unavailable. High iron in water or feed interferes with copper and zinc absorption. High calcium reduces phosphorus absorption.
  • Production demands increase mineral requirements substantially. A high-producing dairy doe needs two to three times the mineral intake of a dry doe at maintenance.

Essential Minerals: Requirements, Deficiency Signs, and Sources

Copper

Copper is arguably the most critical supplemental mineral for goats and the one most frequently deficient. Functions: Immune function, hair pigmentation, connective tissue formation, iron metabolism, reproduction, and nervous system function. Requirement: 10-80 ppm in the total diet, depending on dietary molybdenum, sulfur, and iron levels. Higher molybdenum and sulfur in the diet increase copper requirements because they form insoluble complexes that prevent copper absorption. Deficiency signs:
  • Faded or rough hair coat; black hair turns reddish-brown, red hair turns gold (“fish tail” appearance at the tail tip is an early indicator)
  • Poor growth and general unthriftiness
  • Decreased immune function with increased susceptibility to parasites and infection
  • Anemia
  • Reproductive failure: infertility, abortions, weak kids
  • Swayback (enzootic ataxia) in newborn kids — rear-leg incoordination caused by copper deficiency during gestation
Supplementation: Loose goat minerals should contain 1,500-1,800 ppm copper. In areas with high molybdenum or sulfur, copper oxide wire particle (COWP) boluses administered orally provide a sustained-release copper source that bypasses some of the dietary antagonists. Typical COWP dose is 2 grams for kids, 4 grams for adults, but consult your veterinarian for appropriate dosing for your herd and region.

Selenium

Functions: Antioxidant (works synergistically with Vitamin E), immune function, muscle integrity, thyroid metabolism, and reproductive health. Requirement: 0.1-0.3 ppm in the total diet. Deficiency signs:
  • White muscle disease (nutritional muscular dystrophy) in kids — stiff gait, inability to stand, sudden death from cardiac muscle damage
  • Retained placentas
  • Weak kids at birth
  • Poor immune response
  • Reduced fertility
Regional consideration: Selenium soil levels vary dramatically across the United States. The Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes region, Northeast, and Southeast are notably selenium-deficient. The Great Plains and parts of the Mountain West may have adequate or even toxic selenium levels. Know your region’s selenium status. Supplementation: Loose goat minerals typically contain 20-90 ppm selenium (as sodium selenite or selenium yeast). In severely deficient areas, your veterinarian may recommend injectable selenium (BO-SE or generic equivalent) for does 4-6 weeks before kidding and for newborn kids. Do not oversupplement — selenium toxicity occurs at dietary levels above 5 ppm and can be fatal.

Zinc

Functions: Skin and hoof integrity, immune function, reproduction, growth, wound healing, and enzyme function. Requirement: 40-60 ppm in the total diet. Deficiency signs:
  • Poor hoof quality with cracking and slow growth
  • Skin lesions, hair loss, and crusty dermatitis, especially around the face, ears, and legs
  • Reduced growth rate
  • Poor wound healing
  • Decreased fertility in bucks (zinc is critical for spermatogenesis)
  • Reduced immune function
Supplementation: Loose goat minerals should contain 3,000-6,000 ppm zinc. Zinc methionine and zinc sulfate are well-absorbed forms. High dietary iron and calcium antagonize zinc absorption, so goats on high-iron water or high-calcium diets (heavy alfalfa feeding) may need additional zinc.

Calcium

Functions: Bone formation, muscle contraction, nerve function, blood clotting, and milk production. Requirement: Varies significantly by production stage:
  • Maintenance: 0.3-0.4% of diet dry matter
  • Late gestation: 0.4-0.6%
  • Lactation: 0.5-0.8% (high-producing dairy does at the upper end)
  • Growing kids: 0.4-0.6%
Deficiency signs:
  • Milk fever (hypocalcemia) around kidding — weakness, trembling, staggering, inability to rise, cold ears
  • Rickets in growing kids (bowed legs, swollen joints)
  • Reduced milk production
  • Weak bones in chronic cases
Sources and balance: Alfalfa hay is an excellent calcium source (1.2-1.5% Ca). Grass hay is much lower (0.3-0.5%). Grain-heavy diets are low in calcium and high in phosphorus, which creates an imbalance. The calcium-to-phosphorus ratio in the total diet should be maintained at 2:1 to 2.5:1. This ratio is critical for preventing urinary calculi in bucks and wethers.

Phosphorus

Functions: Bone formation, energy metabolism, rumen microbial function, and acid-base balance. Requirement: 0.2-0.4% of diet dry matter, always balanced against calcium at a 2:1 Ca:P ratio. Deficiency signs:
  • Poor growth
  • Reduced appetite and feed intake
  • Weak bones
  • Decreased milk production
  • Pica (chewing on wood, soil, bones — indicating mineral-seeking behavior)
Sources: Grains are relatively high in phosphorus. Forages are variable. Most goat mineral mixes contain supplemental phosphorus to maintain proper ratios. Dicalcium phosphate and monosodium phosphate are common supplement forms. Critical warning: Excess phosphorus relative to calcium is a primary cause of urinary calculi (kidney stones) in bucks and wethers. Never feed a diet with a Ca:P ratio below 2:1, and maintain access to goat-specific loose minerals.

Additional Important Minerals

Salt (Sodium Chloride)

Goats require salt and will actively seek it. Provide free-choice salt at all times, either as part of the loose mineral mix or as a separate white salt source. Salt consumption typically ranges from 0.25-0.5 oz per head per day. Salt also drives water intake, which supports overall health.

Iron

Goats on pasture rarely need supplemental iron unless they are heavily parasitized (blood-sucking parasites cause iron-loss anemia). Excess dietary iron is a more common problem than deficiency — high-iron well water (above 0.3 ppm) interferes with copper and zinc absorption and can contribute to secondary copper deficiency even when the mineral mix contains adequate copper. If your well water tests high in iron, consider copper oxide wire particle boluses and elevated zinc supplementation, or provide an alternative water source. Have your water tested through your county extension office or a commercial lab.

Magnesium

Important for grass tetany prevention, nerve and muscle function, and enzyme activation. Most goat diets provide adequate magnesium, but lush spring pastures high in potassium can induce magnesium deficiency. Signs include trembling, staggering, and convulsions. Loose goat minerals typically contain adequate magnesium for routine needs.

Iodine

Essential for thyroid function. Deficiency causes goiter (enlarged thyroid) in kids and reproductive problems in does. Iodized salt and goat mineral mixes typically provide adequate iodine. Some regions in the Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest have iodine-deficient soils.

Loose Minerals vs. Mineral Blocks

Loose, granular mineral mixes formulated specifically for goats are the preferred delivery method for several reasons:
  • Goats can consume adequate amounts. Goats have small, soft tongues compared to cattle and cannot effectively lick enough mineral from a hard block to meet their requirements.
  • More consistent intake. Loose minerals are easier and faster for goats to consume, leading to more reliable daily intake.
  • Better formulation flexibility. Loose minerals can be formulated with precise ratios and bioavailable mineral forms.
  • Easier to monitor consumption. You can weigh mineral feeders periodically to track herd intake and adjust management if consumption is too high or too low.
Target consumption: Most loose goat minerals are formulated for consumption of 0.5-1.0 oz per head per day. Track actual consumption by weighing the feeder weekly and dividing by the number of head with access. Feeding tips:
  • Use a covered mineral feeder to protect from rain and contamination
  • Place mineral feeders near water and high-traffic loafing areas
  • Refresh mineral at least weekly; goats will reject stale or clumped mineral
  • Do not mix minerals with feed — this prevents individual animals from self-regulating intake
Hard mineral blocks and salt blocks are widely available and inexpensive, but they are inadequate as the sole mineral source for goats:
  • Insufficient intake. Goats cannot lick enough mineral from a hard block to meet their daily requirements, especially for copper, selenium, and zinc.
  • Weather hardened. Blocks exposed to moisture become even harder and less palatable.
  • Uneven access. Dominant animals monopolize blocks while subordinate animals get little.
Blocks may serve as a supplemental salt source but should never replace a loose mineral program.

Regional Considerations

Mineral supplementation must be tailored to your region because soil mineral content directly affects forage mineral levels. The following are general regional patterns in the United States; specific conditions vary by farm, so forage and water testing are always recommended.

Selenium-Deficient Regions

The Pacific Northwest, Great Lakes states, Northeast, and much of the Southeast have selenium-deficient soils. In these regions:
  • Use a mineral mix with selenium at 50-90 ppm
  • Discuss injectable selenium with your veterinarian for pre-kidding does and newborn kids
  • Supplement Vitamin E alongside selenium for maximum benefit

High-Molybdenum / High-Sulfur Regions

Parts of the West and regions with particular soil types have elevated molybdenum or sulfur that interfere with copper absorption. In these areas:
  • Copper oxide wire particle boluses may be more effective than mineral mix copper
  • Liver copper testing (via liver biopsy at slaughter or veterinary sampling) is the gold standard for assessing copper status
  • Do not rely on blood copper levels alone, as they do not accurately reflect body copper stores

High-Iron Water Regions

Common throughout the eastern US and parts of the Midwest. High-iron water suppresses copper and zinc absorption:
  • Have your water tested for iron content
  • If iron exceeds 0.3 ppm, increase copper and zinc supplementation or consider water treatment
  • Copper oxide wire particle boluses bypass some iron interference

Calcium-Phosphorus Imbalances

Regions where goats are heavily fed grain (show wethers, feedlot kids) or have limited access to legume forages need careful attention to the Ca:P ratio:
  • Always maintain a minimum 2:1 Ca:P ratio in the total diet
  • Add calcium (ground limestone or dicalcium phosphate) to grain-heavy diets
  • Ammonium chloride at 0.5-1.0% of the grain ration helps prevent urinary calculi in bucks and wethers

Building Your Mineral Program

To set up an effective mineral program: contact your county extension office for local soil mineral information, request forage analysis from a commercial lab ($25-50 per sample), and have your well water tested for iron, sulfur, and total dissolved solids. Select a loose mineral mix labeled specifically for goats (not sheep, cattle, or “all stock”) and verify the label shows copper at 1,500-1,800 ppm minimum, selenium at 20-90 ppm, zinc at 3,000-6,000 ppm, and salt at 15-25% of the mix. Provide one covered mineral feeder per 15-20 goats, placed near water and loafing areas. Refresh mineral weekly and clean feeders monthly. Track consumption by weighing the feeder weekly — target 0.5-1.0 oz per head per day. If consumption is low, check for staleness or poor feeder placement. If excessively high, ensure adequate separate salt availability. Conduct annual forage testing and work with your veterinarian to perform liver mineral panels if deficiency is suspected.
