Linear Appraisal Basics for Dairy Goats

Linear appraisal is a standardized system for evaluating the physical conformation of dairy goats. Rather than subjective opinions about how a goat “looks,” linear appraisal assigns numerical scores to specific body traits on a biological scale, creating an objective record that can be used for genetic selection and herd improvement. This guide explains what linear appraisal is, how the scoring works, what traits are evaluated, and how you can use appraisal data in your breeding program.

What Is Linear Appraisal?

Linear appraisal is a structured evaluation performed by trained, certified appraisers who visit your farm and score each animal on a set of defined physical traits. In the United States, the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) administers the linear appraisal program for registered dairy goats. The system is called “linear” because each trait is scored on a continuous biological scale rather than as “good” or “bad.” The scores describe where an animal falls on a range of biological extremes. For example, rump angle is scored from extremely steep to extremely flat, with the ideal falling somewhere in the middle. This approach allows breeders to make targeted mating decisions that correct specific structural weaknesses.

Why Linear Appraisal Matters

  • Objective breed improvement: Scores provide a standardized vocabulary for evaluating conformation across herds and years
  • Genetic evaluation: Appraisal data feeds into ADGA’s genetic evaluation system, contributing to type PTAs (Predicted Transmitting Abilities)
  • Breeding decisions: Identify specific strengths and weaknesses in each doe so you can select bucks that complement her
  • Herd benchmarking: Track how your herd’s conformation compares to breed averages and improves over time
  • Recognition programs: ADGA awards and designations (such as Superior Genetics) incorporate appraisal scores
  • Sale value: Appraised animals with strong scores command higher prices in the breeding stock market

The Scoring System

The 1 to 50 Biological Scale

Each linear trait is scored on a scale from 1 to 50. This is a biological continuum, not a ranking of quality:
  • 1 represents one biological extreme of the trait
  • 50 represents the opposite biological extreme
  • 25 is the biological midpoint
The “ideal” score depends on the trait. For some traits, a higher score is desirable (for example, fore udder attachment, where 50 represents a strongly attached udder). For other traits, an intermediate score is best (for example, rump angle, where extremes in either direction cause problems). And for a few traits, the scoring direction is simply descriptive without a single ideal (for example, dairy form or bone quality where breed type influences the target).

Final Score

In addition to individual linear trait scores, each animal receives a final classification score on a 100-point scale that reflects the overall evaluation of the animal’s conformation:
  • 90 to 100 (Excellent): Outstanding animal, exceptional conformation in all areas
  • 85 to 89 (Very Good): Strong conformation with minor areas for improvement
  • 80 to 84 (Good Plus): Above average, with some moderate weaknesses
  • 70 to 79 (Good): Average conformation, multiple areas for improvement
  • 60 to 69 (Fair): Below average, significant conformation weaknesses
  • Below 60 (Poor): Serious conformation faults
Final scores tend to increase slightly with age and maturity, as does typically improve in body capacity and mammary development through their middle lactations.

Major Trait Categories

The ADGA linear appraisal system evaluates traits across four major categories. Each category contains multiple individual linear traits.

General Appearance

General appearance evaluates the overall structural correctness and breed character of the animal. Traits in this category include: Stature: Measures the height of the animal at the withers. Scored from short (1) to tall (50). Taller animals within a breed are generally preferred, but extreme height without proportional body depth is not desirable. Strength: Evaluates the width and substance of the chest floor, the spring of rib from the top, and the overall front-end assembly. Scored from frail (1) to strong (50). A strong front end supports longevity and the physical demands of high production. Breed Character: Assesses how well the animal represents the physical characteristics typical of its breed. This includes head shape, ear set, color pattern, and overall style. Each breed has specific type standards.

Dairy Character

Dairy character reflects the animal’s ability to mobilize body reserves for milk production and the overall angularity and openness of form associated with high production. Dairy Form: Scored from thick and coarse (1) to angular and open (50). High-producing dairy goats should show clean, flat bone; wide rib spacing; and a lean, angular body condition that indicates energy is being directed to milk production rather than body fat. Body Condition Score: Evaluates the amount of flesh and fat cover over the ribs and loin area. While not traditionally a linear trait, many appraisers note condition as it affects the evaluation of other traits.

Body Capacity

Body capacity evaluates the volume and depth of the barrel, which directly relates to feed intake capacity and, by extension, milk production potential. A doe with greater body capacity can consume more forage and sustain higher production levels. Body Depth: Measures the distance from the top of the spine to the bottom of the barrel at the deepest point. Scored from shallow (1) to deep (50). Deep-bodied does have more room for rumen fill and digestive capacity. Rump Angle: Evaluates the slope of the rump from the hip bones (thurls) to the pin bones. Scored from severe slope (1) to high pins (50), with a moderate slope (approximately 25 to 30) being ideal. Excessive slope causes the vulva to tip forward, increasing susceptibility to reproductive tract contamination. Too little slope (a flat or uphill rump) can interfere with kidding and drainage. Rump Width: Measures the width between the pin bones. Scored from narrow (1) to wide (50). Adequate rump width is essential for easy kidding and provides a broad platform for udder attachment.

Mammary System

The mammary system is the most heavily weighted category in the overall evaluation. Udder conformation directly affects milking ease, milk production, udder health, and the functional longevity of the doe. This is where most improvement can be made through selective breeding. Fore Udder Attachment: Evaluates how strongly the front of the udder attaches to the body wall. Scored from loose and bulgy (1) to strongly and smoothly attached (50). A strongly attached fore udder is less prone to breakdown and injury over multiple lactations. Rear Udder Height: Measures how high the rear udder attaches relative to the vulva. Scored from low (1) to high (50). A high rear udder attachment provides more capacity and keeps the udder elevated for cleanliness and reduced injury risk. Rear Udder Arch: Evaluates the shape of the rear udder where it meets the body. Scored from flat (1) to highly arched (50). A well-arched rear udder provides more capacity and a more defined cleft. Udder Depth: Measures how far the udder floor drops below the hock. Scored from below the hock (1) to well above the hock (50). A higher udder floor (higher score) is strongly preferred because low-hanging udders are subject to injury, contamination, and difficulty with milking equipment. Suspensory Ligament (Medial): Evaluates the strength of the medial suspensory ligament, which creates the cleft between the two halves of the udder. Scored from no defined cleft or a broken-down ligament (1) to a strongly defined cleft (50). A strong suspensory ligament keeps the udder symmetrical and prevents breakdown over the doe’s productive lifetime. Teat Placement: Evaluates where the teats are positioned on the udder floor. Scored from wide and pointing outward (1) to centered and plumb (50). Ideally, teats should hang straight down from the center of each udder half, pointing slightly forward, for easy hand milking and proper fit with milking machine inflation. Teat Diameter: Measures the width of the teat orifice area. Scored from extremely small (1) to extremely large (50). Moderate teat diameter (approximately 25) is ideal: too small makes milking slow and difficult, while too large causes problems with milking equipment fit and increases the risk of mastitis.

How Appraisals Affect Breeding Decisions

Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses

After appraisal, review each doe’s individual trait scores alongside her final score. Identify:
  • Strengths (scores in the desirable range): traits to maintain in the next generation
  • Weaknesses (scores outside the desirable range): traits to improve through buck selection
  • Patterns: Do you see the same weaknesses across multiple does? This suggests a herd-wide genetic issue that a single buck selection can address.

Mating to Complement

The primary use of linear appraisal data in breeding is corrective mating:
  • If a doe scores low on fore udder attachment, select a buck whose daughters are known for strong fore udder attachment (check his PTA for that trait)
  • If several does have shallow body depth, seek a sire with positive PTAs for body capacity traits
  • Avoid doubling up on weaknesses by mating animals with the same faults

Using PTA Type Data

ADGA calculates PTA values for linear type traits just as it does for production traits. These PTAs estimate how a sire’s daughters will score compared to the breed average. When selecting bucks:
  • Look at the PTA for the specific traits you want to improve
  • A positive PTA means the sire’s daughters tend to score higher than average on that trait
  • Reliability percentage indicates how much data supports the PTA (higher is more trustworthy)
  • Balance type PTAs with production PTAs to avoid sacrificing conformation for milk volume or vice versa

Tracking Progress Over Time

Appraise your herd annually. Over several years, you should see average scores improving for the traits you have been selecting for. This objective measurement of progress is far more reliable than visual impression alone.

Scheduling an Appraiser

How to Arrange an Appraisal

  1. Check the ADGA appraisal schedule: ADGA publishes an annual appraisal schedule listing the regions and approximate dates when appraisers will be traveling
  2. Contact ADGA to request appraisal for your herd or to join an existing route in your area
  3. Group with neighboring herds: Appraisers travel on routes, and grouping herds in the same geographic area reduces per-herd costs and makes it easier to schedule
  4. Prepare your animals: Have all animals to be appraised identified with their ADGA registration numbers. Does should be in milk and reasonably close to their normal milking time for accurate mammary evaluation.

Cost and Timing

  • ADGA charges a per-head appraisal fee, typically 8to8 to 15 per animal
  • Travel fees may apply and are often shared among herds on a route
  • Appraisals are usually conducted once per year during scheduled regional tours
  • First-freshening does (in their first lactation) are the highest priority for appraisal, as this establishes a baseline

Preparing for the Appraiser’s Visit

  • Ensure all animals are clean and properly identified
  • Have registration papers or a printed herd list with registration numbers available
  • Milk does at their normal time; the appraiser needs to evaluate udders in their typical state, not overly full or freshly milked out
  • Provide a clean, level area with good footing where animals can be stood up for evaluation
  • Have a helper available to move and hold animals

Getting the Most from Your Appraisal Data

  • Combine with DHIA production data: The most powerful breeding decisions come from considering both type and production together. A doe with a beautiful udder but low production is no more valuable than a high producer with a broken-down udder.
  • Share data with your buck selection advisors: If you use AI (artificial insemination) or lease bucks, share your herd’s appraisal profile so the provider can help recommend sires that address your specific needs.
  • Use ADGA online tools: ADGA’s website provides access to individual animal appraisal histories, herd averages, and genetic evaluation data that integrates both type and production.
  • Attend appraisal clinics: Many ADGA affiliates and extension programs offer educational clinics where you can learn to evaluate type traits yourself, making you a more informed breeder between official appraisal visits.
