# Basic Nutrition Requirements for Goats

# Basic Nutrition Requirements for Goats

Proper nutrition is the foundation of goat health, reproduction, and production. Goats are natural browsers with unique digestive physiology that differs from cattle and sheep, and their nutritional requirements change significantly across life stages. Understanding energy, protein, water, vitamin, and mineral needs -- and how they shift with maintenance, growth, lactation, and late gestation -- allows producers to design feeding programs that maximize animal performance while controlling costs. This guide covers the core nutritional components every goat producer needs to understand.

## Understanding Goat Digestive Physiology

Goats are ruminants with a four-compartment stomach, but they are browsers by nature rather than grazers. This means they preferentially select leaves, twigs, forbs, and browse over grass when given the choice. Key nutritional implications:

* **Higher browse preference** means goats do well on brushy pastures, woodland edges, and diverse forage mixes
* **Selective feeders** that pick through hay and pasture, eating the most nutritious portions first
* **Faster rumen passage rate** than cattle, which allows them to process higher-quality forage efficiently but makes them less efficient at digesting very low-quality roughage
* **Higher protein requirements per unit of body weight** than cattle

## Energy (TDN)

### What TDN Means

Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) is the standard measure of energy in goat nutrition. It represents the digestible portion of the feed and is expressed as a percentage of dry matter. Energy is typically the first limiting nutrient in goat diets and has the greatest impact on body condition, reproduction, and milk production.

### Practical Energy Feeding

* **Forages** (hay, pasture, browse) are the base of all goat diets and should constitute at least 50-75% of total dry matter intake
* **Good quality grass-legume hay** typically provides 55-62% TDN
* **Alfalfa hay** provides 58-65% TDN plus higher protein and calcium
* **Grain supplements** (corn, barley, oats, commercial goat feeds) provide 75-85% TDN and are necessary when forage alone cannot meet energy demands
* **Introduce grain gradually** over 7-14 days to prevent acidosis and enterotoxemia
* **Maximum grain feeding** should generally not exceed 1.5% of body weight per day (e.g., no more than about 2 lbs for a 150-lb doe)

### Signs of Energy Deficiency

* Declining body condition score (below 2.5)
* Poor hair coat quality
* Reduced milk production
* Weak or small kids at birth
* Increased susceptibility to parasites and disease
* Pregnancy toxemia (ketosis) in late-gestation does carrying multiples

## Protein

### Why Protein Matters

Protein is essential for muscle development, milk production, immune function, and fetal growth. Goats require both rumen-degradable protein (RDP), which feeds the rumen microbes, and rumen-undegradable protein (RUP or bypass protein), which is digested directly in the small intestine.

### Common Protein Sources

* **Alfalfa hay:** 15-20% CP, excellent protein source and the easiest way to increase dietary protein
* **Soybean meal:** 44-48% CP, standard protein supplement for concentrate mixes
* **Commercial goat feeds:** Typically formulated at 14-18% CP for various production stages
* **Browse and forbs:** Variable but often 10-18% CP when actively growing
* **Grass hay:** 6-12% CP depending on maturity at harvest; late-cut grass hay may not meet even maintenance protein needs

### Signs of Protein Deficiency

* Slow growth rate in kids
* Reduced milk production
* Poor hair coat and slow hair growth
* Decreased appetite
* Weak immune response
* Low birth weights and reduced colostrum quality

## Water

Water is the most critical and most overlooked nutrient. Goats require clean, fresh water available at all times. Even mild dehydration reduces feed intake, which cascades into reduced production and health problems.

### Practical Water Management

* **Check water sources at least twice daily.** Goats are notoriously picky about water quality and will reduce intake rather than drink dirty, warm, or algae-contaminated water.
* **Provide clean troughs or buckets** scrubbed regularly to prevent biofilm and contamination.
* **In winter**, use heated waterers or break ice at least twice daily. Cold water consumption drops significantly, leading to reduced feed intake and increased risk of urinary calculi in bucks and wethers.
* **Locate water near feeding areas** to encourage intake. Goats that must travel long distances to water will drink less frequently.
* **Lactating does** have dramatically higher water needs. A doe producing 1 gallon of milk daily may drink 3-4 gallons of water. Inadequate water directly reduces milk output.

## Vitamins

### Fat-Soluble Vitamins

**Vitamin A:**

* Essential for vision, immune function, reproduction, and growth
* Goats on green pasture or recently cured green hay typically get adequate Vitamin A from beta-carotene conversion
* Supplementation is needed when goats are fed stored hay for extended periods (beta-carotene degrades in storage), dry-lot fed, or on drought-stressed pasture
* Deficiency signs: night blindness, poor growth, reproductive failure, increased respiratory infections

**Vitamin D:**

* Required for calcium and phosphorus metabolism and bone health
* Goats with access to sunlight synthesize adequate Vitamin D through skin exposure
* Supplementation is needed for goats housed indoors for extended periods, particularly during winter in northern latitudes
* Deficiency signs: rickets in young kids, softened bones in adults, poor growth

**Vitamin E:**

* Works synergistically with selenium as an antioxidant
* Important for immune function, muscle integrity, and reproductive health
* Fresh green forage is an excellent source; levels decline rapidly in stored hay
* Supplementation is recommended in selenium-deficient areas and for animals on stored feeds
* Deficiency (often combined with selenium deficiency): white muscle disease in kids, reproductive failure, retained placenta

### B Vitamins and Vitamin C

* Rumen microbes normally synthesize adequate B vitamins for healthy adult goats
* **Thiamine (B1)** is the exception: polioencephalomalacia (goat polio) occurs when thiamine is destroyed by thiaminase-producing bacteria, often triggered by high-grain diets, sulfur excess, or certain plants. Emergency treatment requires injectable thiamine.
* **Vitamin C** is synthesized by goats and does not typically require supplementation
* **Stressed, sick, or young animals** may benefit from B vitamin supplementation, as rumen function may be compromised

## Feeding by Life Stage: Putting It All Together

### Maintenance (Dry, Non-Pregnant Does and Bucks Outside Breeding Season)

This is the lowest nutritional demand period. Requirements:

* Good quality grass hay or mixed pasture, free choice
* Clean water at all times
* Free-choice loose minerals formulated for goats
* No grain supplementation needed unless body condition is below 2.5

### Growth (Kids from Weaning to Yearling Age)

Young growing animals have the highest protein and energy requirements per unit of body weight:

* High-quality hay (grass-legume mix or alfalfa) free choice
* Grain supplement (14-16% CP commercial kid grower or custom mix) at 0.5-1.0% body weight per day
* Fresh, clean water at all times
* Free-choice kid-appropriate mineral mix
* Monitor growth rates monthly; target 0.25-0.5 lb average daily gain depending on breed and purpose

### Late Gestation (Last 6 Weeks Before Kidding)

Energy and protein demands increase sharply as 70% of fetal growth occurs in the final 6 weeks:

* Quality hay free choice (alfalfa or grass-legume mix preferred)
* Grain supplementation at 0.5-1.5% body weight per day, increasing gradually as kidding approaches
* Watch for pregnancy toxemia in does carrying multiples -- ensure adequate energy intake and avoid stress
* Supplement Vitamin E and selenium 4-6 weeks before kidding (consult your veterinarian for appropriate dose)
* Vaccinate with CD/T booster 4-6 weeks before kidding

### Lactation (Kidding Through Weaning)

Peak milk production occurs at 6-8 weeks postpartum and is the most nutritionally demanding period:

* High-quality hay free choice; alfalfa preferred for its protein and calcium content
* Grain supplementation at 1.0-1.5% body weight per day, adjusted to milk production and body condition
* High-producing dairy does may need grain at up to 3.5 lbs per day, split into 2-3 feedings
* Unlimited clean water -- intake directly correlates with milk production
* Free-choice loose minerals formulated for lactating goats
* Expect some body condition loss (0.5-1.0 BCS) during peak lactation; losses greater than 1.0 BCS indicate the diet is inadequate

### Common Feeding Mistakes

* **Feeding too much grain, too fast.** Grain should always be introduced gradually over 7-14 days. Sudden grain access causes acidosis and enterotoxemia.
* **Relying solely on pasture in winter.** Dormant pasture may have less than 5% protein and 45% TDN -- far below requirements for all but resting dry does.
* **Feeding cattle or horse minerals.** Goats have specific copper requirements that are toxic to sheep and different from cattle. Always use a mineral formulated for goats.
* **Ignoring water quality.** Dirty or inaccessible water reduces intake and undermines the entire feeding program.
* **Underfeeding late-gestation does carrying multiples.** This is the most common cause of pregnancy toxemia.
